To say that I’ve been looking forward to renovating our powder room since we moved into our house last summer would be an understatement. I realize it’s not typically a project most people daydream about, but I couldn’t wait to get our hands dirty. That being said, the original plan was never for us to take on the flooring installation ourselves.
After months of waiting for our preferred contractor to be available (one of my husband’s talented friends @hauswerk.ca) we decided to tackle the whole renovation ourselves, floors and all. And I’m so glad we did! I learned a lot!
We called in some remote text message support from our contractor friend, and binge-watched YouTube DIY videos throughout, which was a major help – what a time to be alive.
Like many powder rooms in older homes, ours is located on our first floor tucked under the main staircase. Since our powder room is arguably the most used washroom in the house (and the smallest) we wanted it to feel not only cozy but comfortable. Because of its compact size, we decided to be a little bold and throw caution to the wind, within reason of course!
Due to the main floor layout, we didn’t have much choice in altering the layout or expanding the washroom. However, on the positive side, these restrictions helped us stick to a budget and get creative!
Armed with a solid plan, we got to work. The goal was to smartly utilize the space available to create a powder room infused with personality. One that felt fresh, slightly modern, but still respectful and in keeping with the character of our century-old home.
